Who We Are
The Hub for Spectrum Management with Adaptive and Reconfigurable Technology (SMART Hub) is a collection of researchers, engineers, and economic and policy experts looking to enact a paradigm shift in the use and management of the wireless spectrum. We believe that spectrum management needs to be adaptive and reconfigurable end-to-end, from policy down through circuits and out through propagation.
Mission
To this end, we are:
- Developing revolutionary technologies to enable unprecedented levels of spectrum agility across all forms of wireless applications.
- Recruiting and training today’s brilliant students to address tomorrow’s spectrum challenges.
- Working with translation partners and policy groups to move spectrum innovations out of the lab and into the real world.
History
The idea of a Department of Defense (DoD) spectrum research laboratory was initially conceived in 2017 during a joint meeting between Baylor University and the Army and Naval Research Laboratories (ARL and NRL). Conversations with congressional members and staff regarding the idea began in 2018. In 2020, the National Science Foundation (NSF) provided planning support to form the initial SMART Hub team through the NSF Spectrum Innovation Initiative (SII) program.
In 2022, Congress approved initial funding for SMART Hub, which officially launched in October 2023 as a DoD Spectrum Innovation Center in collaboration with ARL.
